The painting ‘Behind every stone’ originated from Meda Mládkova’s story of her struggle to establish the Kampa Museum in Sova’s Mill. ‘You know,’ she told me, ‘I fought for every stone here.’ This gave me the idea of taking a canvas, spreading it out on the cobblestones in front of the museum’s entrance and imprinting each cobble onto the canvas. The painting’s colour formation characterises the dynamics of her journey: the beginning was difficult, therefore the colour is darker and rougher, but then the pallet of colours brightens and transforms into the radiant and liberating colours of the sky, lightening and softening the painting. The Kampa Museum is the result of a long and ambitious journey that has ended in success both for Meda and for the thousands of visitors who cross its cobblestones every year. The painting is in Jan and Meda Mládek’s private collection in Moravský Krumlov castle.
